Carl L. Harshman, Ph.D.

Carl is the founder and CEO of Carl L. Harshman & Associates, Inc., an organization change, leadership development, and performance improvement consulting group, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Carl brings practical experience from business and social sectors, an academic background in human and organizational development, and more than thirty years of consulting to major corporations, government, and education.

Carl earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at The Ohio State University and his master’s degree at Wright State University. In 1972, he joined Saint Louis University to start the Office of Institutional Research and subsequently served as Director of Academic Planning. He was appointed dean of a new, innovative undergraduate college for working adults and served in that capacity for seven years during which time the college grew to over one thousand students and established a national reputation for quality in nontraditional learning. Carl was also a professor of education at the University.

As he transitioned from the University to his current profession, Carl was a leading edge consultant involved in a series of national initiatives to help large corporations change their cultures and ways of doing business. Over the past two decades, Carl’s work has evolved to aligning business strategy and culture with the leadership of an organization. In this decade, he has worked with organizational leadership teams and leadership development strategies.

In 2006, Carl created a joint venture with jobEQ, a global company dedicated to furthering knowledge about and research in emotional intelligence. The Institute for Work Attitude & Motivation, which serves North America and some international providers, does education, certification, research, and support services. The primary focus of The Institute is the application of iWAM Survey to coaching, development, managing, and succession planning. The core technology of the iWAM system is aimed at identifying the attitudinal and motivational patterns of high performance leaders, professionals, and staff in order to support recruiting, selection, and development activities of the organization.

Over the past three decades, Carl has worked with companies such as Ford Motor, John Deere, General Dynamics, Goodyear, Boeing, Engelhard, National Steel, and DTE Energy. Public sector clients include the United States Navy, the State of Washington, King County (WA), and the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle. In the early stages of his career, he consulted to a number of colleges and universities and has worked with Wyman Center, The Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate, and the Center for Principled Family Advocacy in the not-for-profit sector.

Carl has made presentations at a number of regional, national and international meetings including the Association for Quality and Participation, Ecology of Work, Work in America Institute, the Industrial Relations Research Association, and the International Association for Business Ethics.

He holds certifications in the Virtual CEO Strategic Planning System, the Language and Behavior Profile System, Executive Coaching & Development, the Inventory for Work Attitude and Motivation, Leadership Effectiveness Assessment, and Sales Performance Assessment. In addition, Carl is a certified executive coach whose clients include a chairman of the board, chief executive officers, and key managers in businesses and the social sector.

Carl is the senior author on four books: Teaming Up: Achieving Organizational Transformation; Team Training: From Start-Up to High Performance; Team Leader Training; and, Managing Change: A Practical Guide for Transforming Organizations. He is the primary contributor to a video entitled “Troubled Partnerships: When Labor and Management Can’t Make It Work.” Carl has also published several articles in journals including a series of co-authored papers on ethics in leadership.

His new book, Decoding Performance: Using the iWAM to Unlock Motivational and Attitudinal Patterns will be published in the spring of 2009.
